Trying to prep for paint with only a couple of hours working time is a real pain. I envy somewhat the retired guys who can put in a 8-12 hour day working on their restorations.

How are you going to clean it up for paint? My current method is to remove whatever really needs sandblasting, which allows for easier wire brushing of everything else. I'm not a big fan of blasting around shafts and seals. Of course grease removal comes first.

At home we use kerosene. At work we use agitene. Some of the commercial stuff will remove the oils from your skin--not fun as I had that to happen cleaning parts in a vat with varsol. It only took that one time to teach me to use gloves!

Wonderful pictures!! I didn't realize there was such a variety of IH trucks. Were 9 series trators featured or are they just that common in that area? The 2 older trators with duals, WD-40's I guess, sure looked fun to play with!

I was at a competition tractor pull once and the drawing card was a Mack or Peterbilt out of Ohio (I think). He had a large box mounted where the fifth wheel goes. When he took off the front end gently raised up and never thought about coming down till he backed out at the full pull line. He poured out enough smoke to block out the sun for a few moments!

The more I think about it, I don't recall ever seeing a MM combine except in pictures. I did see a Case once. Most everything here is IH or Deere. A few Massey's and Gleaners scattered about.

We have 5 tractors here built between the early 20's and the late thirties and we have never had any problems with them leaking by the O-rings. One of them has been here since the 50's.

Interesting pics--I especially liked the combine--not every day you see a MM combine. So, did you let the guy with the army truck hook to the sled?

Either the 20 has zilch for compression or you had a ton of belt dressing on that short belt!

I had an ID-9 once but it was too far gone to restore. It was last used to power a sawmill. Tractors that big were just too big for our area back when they were made. Being "wheatland" style instead of rowcrop didn't help either. My family did have and ID-6 with a mounted blade that they used until '72.

IHC / threshing with a Titan
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:38:29 PM »
Yep, one of the last ones built. Around '52 or '53 the guy that purchased the thresher drove to the midwest to pick it up so he didn't have to pay the freight (train). He hauled it back on a 1 1/2 ton Ford flatbed--talk about beign fully loaded! He used it until the late 50's until the hitch pin came out while going up a hill. Thresher went backwards into a ditch and turned over breaking a HUGE belt pulley and a couple smaller pieces. They brought it on home and put it under a shed. Instead of fixing it he bought a pull type combine and left it under the shed until he was ready to tear the building down in the early '90s. Then we came along....

Lack of time is why I have practically quit working on the Titan. Now that the wheat is harvested and some needed building repairs have been made around the farm, I'll see if I can squeeze it in the shop.

This is my 1920 Titan 10-20 hooked to dads early 50's model Canadian built IHC thresher. The thresher has had the blower removed and a conveyor installed--previous owner dropped the straw right into a New Holland baler. Without the blower we had plenty of power--we were able to keep the conveyor loaded--heads on one bundle touching the tails on the next.

There are more devices here for mowing grass than I care to admit--and they are all to old to have power steering or beverage can holders!
