As an update, one of the engines failed to gain enough compression to run as it should after a couple of seasons of it being at shows. I distinctly remember telling myself I didn't need to check the cylinder taper-it looked good enough. Well, I dismantled it a month ago and found .018 thousands taper. Off it went to the machine shop and had a sleeve inserted. Now and a couple of hundred $ later it runs as it should. Got lazy and took a shortcut and ultimately paid for it....

The thing is pretty well done. Next comes the hood, then I'll start on the undercarriage

Project is going way too fast. Got to slow down as this is a winter project and it isn't even cold outside..

Here is the beginnings of a 1953 John Deere crawler. I am using the carcasses of two tractors. More pics to follow as it progresses.

IHC / 3/4" NPT Spark Plug

Here is a spark plug I made that will work on a Titan 10-20. The tapered cone above the body is the handle from a Snap-on screwdriver. The electrode is a piece of stainless steel rod. The green insulator is a plastic composite something I had. The body is 1 1/8" and 1" hex. It even works!

Yes, it was a model 30 but equipped with hillside attachments. There was a lever on the platform that moved forward and backward that operated a big screw jack with acme thread. It was powered by a 6 cyl hercules flat head engine.

Here is a couple more pictures from about the same era. The back of the photos say "Holt Steamer". Can you imagine the sparks from that thing in a stubble field?  Wonder if they burned straw.

The header came off easily and the machine and header were stored inside a barn. The canvass drapers were taken off and rolled up. I actually pulled a machine like this a JD model 30 hillside machine with a Cat diesel 50 crawler. It took a heavy tractor to hold it when going down a slight down hill. I still have the book for the JD machine.

The first photo was taken on my grandfathers ranch who knows when. The header followed the ground and the machine was hand leveled through a series of friction clutches.
The other picture is of me in the early '70s on a new Harris we purchased. Look to the left above the tire and there is one of the leveling cylinders. It leveled itself through a swinging pendulum that you can barely make out under the operators platform.

Congrats.
I've been very busy trying to put 40 acres of whinter wheat. Had to cut it with a rotary swather as it was 6' tall. A lot of the horse people around here want it in small bales and I'm having a hard time feeding a 4' high windrow into my Freeman bailer.

I just picked up my latest Fairbanks vertical engine. It's a 6 hp hoist engine complete with the original hoist. The engine is mounted on the same base as the hoist drum, and the engine block is cast with a housing to carry the main bull gear shaft. It's a 1912.
