'round the pot-bellied stove / Minden NV (Ramsden) Show
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:13:50 PM »
The show seems to be dwindling in the past 5 years or so, but according to the gate keepers the attendance is about the same.  I have noticed less tractors, but it seems like more engines show up.
It's still a very enjoyable time.
Still have to get Ramdsen's Titan going...

Antique Tractors and related items / John Deere H
« on: July 02, 2008, 10:41:31 AM »
1945 year John Deere model HN, electric start. The HN means a single front wheel, the JD archives say only 1,100 were made. This can be a restorers dream. The tractor is in pieces, Transmission, frame and front pedistal in one piece, although the transmission is rusted solid and useless. A complete transmission and rear end from a running tractor comes with the deal (I was going to switch serial plates). 3 pallets of parts is included, including cylinders(2), heads(2), valves, springs, new rings, fans, fan shaft, governor. 2 radiators, one complete, (will need a core) and castings for the other, upper and lower water pipes, ect. There are enough parts to build one complete tractor and have parts left over. Not included are sheetmetal parts like hood, plug wire loom/bent pipe and rear tank mount. The grills are rough but could be repaired, and it will need rear rims and tires. The front tire is in god shape and very useable.
Reason for selling is I just finished a 1939 H and had enough of them for awhile.
Asking $750 or will trade for a complete running JD model 40 or 420 engine.
Tractor located in Fallon, Nevada

Antique Tractors and related items / Cat 30
« on: May 17, 2008, 05:06:32 PM »
George,
Those in the pic's appear to be the old style pipe plug. Maybe they're original, but I don't know. The cat book is very vague as to drawing or description, and I've heard they may also could have been brass. I've been told by the Holt people there is a guy named John Matta (sp?) who is making reproductions for around $40 per.
But again, I'd like to know what they look like before buyiing.
What year is yours? Mine belonged to my Grandfather who purchased it in 1929. Restored and painted back to original gray.

Do you paint them after you fix them?
Like to see pictures of it when you get it home.

Looking for original style gas tank caps that fit the early Cat model 30 fender mounted long tanks. It takes 2, for both the gas and distillate.
Thanks

Rebuilt, not restored.
I bit the bullet and dove into a bunch of them. I rebuild magnetos as a hobby and as favors to friends.  Then it becomes a favor to a friend who is doing a favor for his friend and so on......Lots of times I just say no and expecially when it came to these..what do you call them? Auto Sparkers, Smyth, Henricks Novelty Co, Wizard, Dynamo?
I didn't take any before photos, but here are some after the fact.

The biggest problem I have is what to charge. Parts and materials are easy.
Always asked is how long is it going to take?
How in the hell do I know until the unit is apart. Sometimes an hour, sometimes de-bugging takes 3 days. A KW style HK took 3 weeks working an hour or so a day or until becoming utterly disgusted working on what seemed to be a fruitless endavor.
My time is worth something. Fix one in an hour and charge 50 bucks and some are happy and some feel robbed. Charge 10 bucks an hour and get into an older KW and the cost will exceed the magneto's worth....
Got a KW type HK here that belongs to one of the guys behind the ACMOC show coming up in Woodland. I don't know what I can charge him, surely not enough for the time I've got into it. Oh, well......Here's the photos.

Thanks for the info. I was using the "jif" file extension. "jpg" gives better compression in this old Adobe software I'm using. Problem fixed!

Be interesting to see how it's made and what's inside that slider valve box.

Tools, Trades and Engineering / Float Charger
« on: May 05, 2008, 09:57:15 AM »
I just bought 3 of them from WalMart. Reading the instructions and then re-reading them, I believe it is inferred that it can be used connected in parallel for more than one battery. By saying that, their directions address the issue of overloading when connected to more than one battery during the charging phase. I think that if you had a few, say 3 or 4 batteries hooked together in parallel, after being individually charged by the unit, then connected together in the maintenance mode it would work.

Anyone tried this?

How does one post a picture that is large enough to look at?  I posted 3 pictures of a Fairbanks engine the other day and had to keep sizing them down in order to be uploaded. The result was tiny thumbnails.
