ATIS General Tractor Discussion / enclosed trailers

The drawback I have against closed trailers is that I want to watch the load. What would happen if a chain or binder came loose and you couldn't see it? You would have a huge mess.....

It used to be that everyone had to stay "on topic" , or at least have a tractor related reference. That hasn't happened in quite a while. When was Spencer's last post?

George,
I wonder where that minature steam tractor that Bill Ramsden had went. I had my eye on it, but was afraid to ask what he wanted for it. More than $5k undoubtedly.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Fall Hunting Trip
« on: September 05, 2009, 10:12:55 AM »
We are going scouting for elk, but the main reason is we are going to Thomas Creek, where it meets the middle fork of the Salmon river. Way back when I was going to the university in Reno I had a part time job working at Harrahs auto collection as a mechanic. Wasn't long before they found out about my agricultural background. Harrah owned 160 acres there, built a retreat and resort for himself and his entertainment friends. He had a twin otter and all supplies were flown in, including farm equipment, piece by piece. For 4 years I was up there alot doing equipment maintenance and repairs. I managed to get an invite for a day visit.
I can go on and on about that place, but what really comes to mind is when I took the otter up there, totally dismantled a jeep cj 5, made two trips to the Boise airport where I met the truck that hauled it back to Reno. Then I put it back together and they painted and sold it.  I should have bought it.
Ever haul 200 gallons of gasoline in a bladder? We did that all the time in the otter, loading in Challis Idaho.
Enuf,
Dave

George, you're right. The back of the photo says its a Best.
John, the crop yields in that area depend upon how wet the spring months are and the timing of the rains. I've seen as little as a half ton per acre to as much 3 tons.

A friend and I are leaving here (Northern Nevada) in a Cessna 210 and heading up into the northern Idaho wilderness area. There are quite a few dirt landing strips there, but no roads leading into or out of that area. We generally stay at one of the lodges along the middle fork of the Salmon river. I don't have a tag this year so I'm going along for the ride and the scenery.

Any of you guys see "Farmer"? He's on the engine list and a big fan of that show.

Up until 1966 we were pulling a John Deere #36 hillside combine with a Cat diesel 50.  We had to use something that heavy to hold the combine when going downhill. We were dry farming 2,200 acres back then. In 1966 we purchased a Harris self propelled hillside machine new for $16,000. Talk about instant modernization! I still have the original owner/operators manual for that John Deere. Everytime I see it the memories come flooding back. The header was a flat canvas belt style with a wooden reel. Took 30' wide cuts. Most fields were 320 acres, 1/2 mile wide and a mile long. We were lucky to get 4 rounds the first day. That is one of the same fields in the picture I posted with the horses pulling that combine.

These were taken on my grandfathers ranch. The tractor is a Holt Steamer.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Power increases?

Is your engine a John Deere or Hercules? Deere used their engines in the later models. I have 3 of the Deeres, mainly for parts.

I know of guys sending off the crankshafts out of JD As & Bs to be stroked. They weld up the rod journals on the rear side up to 1/2" and then turn them to give more stroke. The downside is they have to remove some of the crankcase casting to allow the rods to clear at BDC. Then they're bored big time, cams reground, governor RPM spun up and secret fuel additives used. I haven't heard of one blowing up yet. There is 5 or 6 in this immediate area.

I rebuilt the engine in my little JD model H recently. Bored .125 over, new aluminum pistons and the cam and followers were sent to Iowa and a hot "puller" grind was done to it. Can't say anything about the horsepower gain, but it lopes when idling. Kinda fun.

Thanks for the pictures. Someday I'm going to have one of those little crawlers. There was one here locally for sale but by the time I heard about it it was gone.

Try posting an ad on Smokestak. That site gets a lot of traffic.

Bought it a while back and when I took it apart, what a mess. Someone removed the piston and rod and probable belted it up to another source of power so the pump jack stayed in operation. Now it's yard art. Shows how you can get fooled by appearances. The crankshaft bearing bolts were tightened to give the impression it was stuck.
Got my money back and kept the engine. Now it's on display on the ditch bank.
