'round the pot-bellied stove / Update on oak desk
« on: February 12, 2008, 12:33:48 PM »
Well I missed the bid by $8. I bid $165 and at the time I bid there was only one other bidder. Oh well, I didn't need it all that bad and at least it didn't get given away at bargain basement price.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Sundogs

Signs of a cold day. The weather phenomena known in this area as "sundogs" usually appears on a cold frosty winter morning although they can last throughout the whole day. Not the kind of day to be sitting out on an open tractor.  In some conditions they will also appear in the summer.

This one is listed as for parts but it looks fairly complete and restorable to me. Nice old Minni U. Coming up at a farm auction in Sask. this spring.

Forum Technical Help / How to find this website

I think part of the reason the ATIS discussion forums is getting off to a very slow start is that no one can find it.

I've done a Google search and can't find it.

The old ATIS homepage has nothing about the new dicussion forums.

If you build it, they will come, only works if they can find it.:)

Could be right George. I haven't tried searching for this forum as I just put it into my favourites right away the first day so its easy to get here in one click.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Harvest of 86
« on: January 19, 2008, 12:31:14 PM »
Glad you like the photos as they are pretty special to me too. Both combines have sat for the past twenty years now at my brother's farm. Still all in one piece but I doubt you could just jump on and drive one away after all these years. Heres a picture of the crop being swathed before it was combined. Thats an old Versatile 103 , 20 foot cut powered by the Wisconsin V4. Versatile was a Canadian company based in Manitoba, eventually sold out and is now part of Buehler.

Things are a little slow here  on the forum lately. How about we take a look at a picture from the harvest of 1986 at which time my brother brought an old Massey Harris 26 out of retirement to thresh out a few bushels of oats one day. The 20 foot swath was heavy and made for slow forward motion.

Though I am not a Case man personally that is really cool. I really like haveing the ability to post Pics.

Dave

Hi Dave.
I agree, the ability to post a picture along with the subject that is being discussed is a huge advantage I think. Here is another pic from the same Case buyers guide showing a 530 tractor pulling the model 80 pull type combine. This appears to be a newer versiion of the late fourties Case model A combine that my Dad had for years.

Heres a scan of a page from the early sixties Case farm equipment brochure. It shows the Case model 1010 ag crawler.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Antique oak

I've never seen one like it and have no idea of it's worth but if the price is right, then go for it!  It's sad that about the only solid wood furniture pieces you can find today are antiques unless you build it yourself or have it custom built.

Alan, I'd say your right, probably impossible to find that quality furniture new today at any price. As far as value, I'll have to look around on ebay to see if anything similar is selling to get an idea what to bid. Tenders close next week.

This post strays outside the range of antique tractors but I think it qualifies as an antique. I took this picture of the old oak desk today. Kicking around the idea of putting in a bid on it as it is up for tender. Not that I need another antique but its a piece of local history, plus I could make use of it in my own office. Its got a unique folding feature that I have never seen before. Just curious if anybody on this forum would have a clue how old it might be or what it might be worth "as is".

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Grandpa's MF 50

It's got 3,300 original hours, runs great but does need a clutch.  Zach, my son, is especially tickled to have it.  His kindergarten class came out to our or his pumpkin patch last fall for pumpkins and a hayride.  He was very pleased and told everyone that the tractor pulling the wagon was his Great Grandpa's.

Nice little Massey alright. It has the same sheet metal as my Super 90 so would be the same series. Mine is about a 1964 model with the Perkins diesel. Its my general purpose chore tractor and the front end loader is really handy. It runs every week in the winter to put round bales out in the cattle feeders.

We have several of the rotator lamps, Niagara Falls, a light house, a mill, a bus climbing a mountain, a cabin in the snow, the choo-choo and some others. They are difficult to find today. Also the plastic does deteriorate. The original ones were quite heavy and smaller. The outside was glass with the inside rotator made off celluloid. Here is a pot-bellied stove rotator lamp. Very appropriate for this thread, I think.....Helen

That stove lamp is unique, and appropriate to this thread. I've never seen one like it but its surprising how many of the plastic (celluloid) type show up on e bay. But a lot more expensive than they were when new. They are a little fragile. Mine has survived without major damage but I handle it pretty carefully now. I don't know if this picture qualifies as a lamp or a decoration but it is a lighted santa claus I have that still works. It seems to be made of an almost bio-degradable plastic. I can't believe how cracked up it is and expect it will just fall apart one of these days.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Rock Island Heider

Bet you wish that one was still in the family! We never had any family farm photos with equipment in them until around the 50's.

So true John. I am lucky to have the few pictures that I do of the early days of farming this land. See those big fenders on the Heider? I have those leaning against the side of the barn. That curved corrugated iron roof was saved and used as an ice house roof in later years. The big channel iron frame rails that the engine sat between were saved and used to extend the frame of a home built bale wagon in the early 1970s. The round cast iron seat survived and I used it to make a small welding table. Being careful not to burn any holes in it.:D

I'd mentioned this old Rock Island Heider tractor over on the ATIS discussion list. Thought a picture here might of some interest.

Following the auction sale thread, here is one that I took back in 03 of a huge farm antique auction. There were several trailers of goodies like this one with all the magnetos, etc.
