Looks like a beautiful homestead.  I also like seeing any pictures that don't have snow in them!  We had about six-inches this morning and I am already sick of winter.

I mentioned this on the general list as well, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has ever heard of Maxwell Steel wheels?  They were made as an attachment for a rubber tired tractor, kind of like complex wheel weights.  When you needed extra traction you would open up the spikes and be able to pull right through (like a giant sunflower).  The wheels were designed by someone in Marshfield, Wisconsin (Mr. Maxwell).  There was a set on e-bay about a month ago and since I have an affinity for things on steel, I bought them and brought them home last weekend (I'll post a photo later on).  I vaguely remember seeing an ad for them in one of my books/magazines, but I can't find it now.  The pair I have were supposed to have come from Mr. Maxwells nephew, and may be the only set in existance.  Has anyone else ever seen/heard anything about these?

My Grandpa used to keep a stack of those handy in the shop, I'm pretty sure I've lost all the ones I used to have, but I'll keep looking.

I hope to have a cross motor Case someday, they're on my "bucket" list :)

I have a bunch of 1" thick belting that came from the iron mines in the UP of Michigan, that stuff works great for driving steel wheeled tractors on concrete/asphalt.  Most of the time I just drive them around the field where they can do little harm.

I'm waiting for the perfect 10-20 to show up, I have a great set of side panels and a hood, just need the rest of the tractor.  I would really like a 15-30/22-36 on full steel.  I have rear steel for my H, and wouldn't turn down any of the F series on steel, it's only a matter of time, and oh yeah, space.  It's hard to explain, but I have always liked the steel wheeled stuff better.

I spent memorial day weekend re-organizing my pole barn and taking a few of the toys out for a drive.  Sadly, it had been three to four years since most have been out in the sunlight, but I carefully started the opperational ones and took them for a ride.  I tried to move them around so I could fit just one more inside, but I failed.  Anyway, attached is a photo of my steel wheel row (the ones I like the best).  They include a 1937 pacemaker, a 1935 JD D, a 1937 Case CC, and a 1938 Case C.  Not in the photo is my 1935 Hart-Parr/Oliver 18-27, also on full steel, but tore apart in the shop.

Enjoy, Joe

George,

I like the "building a new shop" idea, I've often thought about it, but I broke down and spent a few days this summer cleaning and organizing my place so I could actually work on things.  It's starting to infill again right now since I opened up so much floor space, my wife is finding things to put in there :(

Maybe I need to give her my shop and build another one, I can see it now, honey, I've decided that you need my shop more than me so you can have my old one, I'll be over here in my new 60X100 pole barn if you need anything..

Joe

George,

It sounds like you now have a reason to clean your shop :)

Thanks for the links Danny.  I like the soybean goo the best, but at around $20 per gallon, it should coat the parts with gold leaf when it's done.  I know I should support some of the farmer grown stuff, but for an occasional use it looks like kerosene is going to be the best.  I'll try to come up with somethings new, it seems quite a few folks are watching, we just need some more interesting topics to get them to jump in.

Thanks John,

I'll check into the stuff you recommend.  the biggest problem I can see is I will be using my parts washer about twice a month (I work pretty slow) so I don't want to fill it up with toxic, expensive stuff that will evaporate or break down before I get the chance to enjoy it.  Is there such a thing as "green" or non-toxic cleaner?

Can you use mineral spirits?  Would the kerosene go bad/evaporate after awhile, how bad does it smell?

Ok Guys,

What do you use, what works the best for general grease/grime removal?  I have a 20-gal parts washer that has never had fluid in it, I think it's time to put it to work.

Another question, do you have any idea where I should look for new rings?
