DaveErnst has created a photo album with some great pictures of the 2hp F-M T that he restored.

Would be nice if I could create a link to Dave's album from this message but I don't know how to do that.

Forum Technical Help / Photo albums
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:21:02 PM »
I added a photo album this morning.  Just 2 pictures of a spring winder, but it is a start.

Is there some easy way to find out who has photo albums on this forum?

I'm guessing you have to visit each member list page to see if they have an album set up.

So far I haven't found anyone else that has set up a photo album.

Last night I started the 18hp Stover for the first time.

Oiled up the piston and cylinder real good, hooked up a freshly charged battery, primed the cylinder with gas, and gave it a try.

You don't spin over a big engine by yourself very fast, but this one started quite easy.  Of course having the priming cup left open as a compression relief helped a lot.  With it closed I couldn't have pulled it over compression.

It started quite easy and I started it a couple of time and ran it for a few minutes.  Of course starting a well oiled engine in a barn does create a bit of smoke and exhaust.

Needless to say, Kathy noticed the smell immediately when I came into the house.
Had to change my clothes and take a shower or go back out to the shop without dinner.

For some reason wives just don't seem to appreciate the smells of this hobby.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Almost 700 members
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:11:49 PM »
I see that we're getting close to 700 members.  Unfortunately, amost all the members we've added in the last 6 months are not really people interested in the forums.

Wonder who the last new member is that actually posted a message on any of the forums?

SEL General Stationary Engine Discussion Forum / Another new engine

I bought a 12hp Ingeco sideshaft this weekend.
I'll pick it up in March when I go to the Cottonwood AZ show.

Will be a long 3 months waiting to see it in person:(

But I'll have that time to play with the 18hp Stover which should arrive later this month :D

Heres a link to the Ingeco.

Danny,

I just noticed that I'm getting close to your number of posts on the ATIS forums.  If you want to stay on top, you'd better start posting again:D

Here's an attempt at creating a poll on the types of engines in your collection

SEL General Stationary Engine Discussion Forum / Vertical engines
« on: November 30, 2008, 07:23:59 PM »
Dave,

For awhile it seemed like I was buying more vertical engines that horizontal ones.  In some ways I kind of prefer the verticals and they generally take up less space than the horizontals.

However, the last couple of engines I've gotten have been horizontals.

I just traded away one of my verticals for the horizontal tank cooled I'm getting, so I think the collection is back to being more horizontals than verticals.  I'll have to do a count and see what the leader.

So here's a little poll for the group.  Do you have more vertical engines or more horizontal engines in your collection?

I don't know if the forum has a way of doing polls, but if it has, maybe someone could create a poll asking the above question.

I made a deal on Friday for an engine that hopefully will be delivered to my place before Christmas!

I'll post pictures when it arrives.  Until it arrives I'd rather not post as it isn't a done deal until the engine is actually in route.

I'll just say it is a large portable engine on original cart with screen cooling.

Forum Technical Help / Members List seems to be short
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:32:02 PM »
The members list seems to only have 134 members, but the bottom of the discussion forums screen shows that we're now up to 340 members.

I've also looked on various days for the latest member and they are never in the Members List.

So it the Members List not automated?  I'm thinking it either is not automated or Spencer is busy with other projects and not keeping it updated.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Saturday classes
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:32:39 PM »
During the winter months the club I belong to (EDGE&TA Br15) has a class on the last Saturday of each month.

We've been doing this for many years and can use some new ideas of topics or things we can do in these classes.

I'll post some of the ones we've done in the past after I get some responses to this message.

Also.... does your club have anything like a last Saturday of the month class or monthly meeting with the goal of educating people on how to do stuff related to the hobby?

'round the pot-bellied stove / Over 300 and still nothing going on
« on: November 18, 2008, 05:09:16 PM »
I've been busy with various things and haven't been on the forum for almost a month.  Checked back today and see that we now have over 300 members.

Unfortunately it seems that all the new ones are lurkers and not posters:(

Was a bit surprised that only a couple threads had been posted to since I was last on.

What do we need to do to get people to post?

'round the pot-bellied stove / Minden NV (Ramsden) Show
« on: August 18, 2008, 02:43:13 PM »
Anyone go to the Minden show this past weekend?

Actually, I already know one of you were there as I talked to Bill Ramsden on the phone Friday and he had mentioned you were there.

I had planned on going, but a family crisis required that we stay closer to home.

Curious as to how well attended Bill's show was this year.  Is it growing or declining?

'round the pot-bellied stove / Getting people to these forums
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:03:50 AM »
We also are growing in number of subscribers very slowly and I think the main reason is that no one can find these forums.  I got 9 more subscribers by posting a message on the SEL list which referred to a picture I had posted on this forum.  Got some more people here, but I didn't notice any of them posting anything.

We've only got a handful of people that post to these forums :(

I think to get more people posting, we need to simply get more people.  I'm guessing here, but I'd guess that any forum, popular or not, has a pretty small percentage of the subscribers that actually post.  The majority of people visiting forums only lurk and rarely post anything.

I think part of the problem is that unless we do something directly to get people to these forums that they are not finding them on their own.  As a good example if you go to the http://www.atis.net homepage there is no mention or link to these forums.  How are people going to find us without a little help in pointing them in our direction:confused:

Spencer.... feel free to post a reply and let us know what you think.  Were these forums just an experiment and you've lost interest?

This past weekend I saw something I've never seen before.
I've seen steam engines converted into internal combustion engines, but this is the first time I've seen a gas engine converted to steam.

Appears to have been a 3hp Fairbanks Morse Z converted to run on steam or compressed air.  When I took the picture it was running off an Shramm air compessor.
