ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Another new toy, JD 60 Orchard
« on: June 23, 2010, 09:06:45 AM »
This is the one I mentioned on the list.  It's one of 297 made, wasn't looking for it, it just kind of found me.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Still Kicking, new toys
« on: May 27, 2010, 12:36:48 PM »
I thought the forum was dead as I haven't been able to get on for a few months, not sure why.  Anyway, I thought you might like to see some pictures of my newest project.  I really don't know when/if I will ever get it done, but it's something I've wanted for awhile.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Propane Tank Question
« on: March 04, 2010, 03:34:26 PM »
Boredom prevents me from giving up on this forum quite yet, and I have been having problems posting to the main list so here's my question:  I purchased a trailer with two 30-lb propane tanks to feed the heater and generator.  The tanks have the old style fittings on them.  Can I just switch out the fittings or do I have to buy new tanks?  I think I also heard that as long as it was an RV I could get the old tanks filled, but I haven't tested that theory yet.  Does anyone know?

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Spring Sales
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:29:27 PM »
If anyone knows of and decent tractor auctions in the mid-west this spring, please post them.  I'm starting to really look forward to going to a few sales when the snow melts, but haven't seen too much out there.  Even the Aumann web site has very few listed.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Stupid Question - Trailer towing balls
« on: November 13, 2009, 10:22:15 AM »
Does anyone know why there are so many different size towing balls?  Does a 2" ball really have more towing ability than a 1-7/8" ball?  I hate having to switch back and forth, anyone know the history of such mundane things?

'round the pot-bellied stove / Snow Plow Questions
« on: September 23, 2009, 09:48:57 AM »
I have an old 1978 Dodge snow commander with a Meyers plow on it.  It came from the factory with the plow.  Anyway, I'm tired of all the fluids leaking from every orface on the truck and it needs to go away.  I only use it to plow my driveway so it doesn't have to work that hard.  After pricing out new plows, I was wondering if I could just buy a new Meyers plow mount that fits my truck 1997 F250, and use the old plow with it?  I think it would be too much work to modify the old dodge mount to fit my ford (I measured last night and it wouldn't be easy).  Does anyone know if it would even be possible to do something like this, or have the plow styles changed so much over the past 30 years that a new mount would never work on an old plow (from the same manufacturer)?

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / enclosed trailers
« on: September 14, 2009, 01:49:32 PM »
Anyone haul their tractors in an enclosed trailer?  I am thinking about getting an enclosed gooseneck that will double as winter storage for my car.  I wonder how hard it would be to tie things down so they don't move around when your going down the road.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / ATIS List
« on: September 14, 2009, 01:46:01 PM »
Is the main list down, or just really slow?  I haven't gotten an e-mail for three days.  I hope the tractor world didn't cease to exist and I missed the memo.

'round the pot-bellied stove / Fall Hunting Trip
« on: September 02, 2009, 01:12:58 PM »
The cool weather we have been having has gotten me excited about heading out to South Dakota for my annual hunting trip.  This year it will be just me and my two boys (12&9).  We usually get to see quite a few tractors and watch portions of the harvest.  Does anyone know how the crops are fairing in southern MN and eastern SD?

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Parts Tractors
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:52:58 AM »
I am thinking about cleaning out a few projects I will never get to.  I have about 15 tractors that could go, some need alot of work, some not too much.  I was thinking about organizing a parts tractor auction, I wonder if anyone would come?  I'd like to get several other people together to thin out their collections at the same time (get 100+ parts tractors).  Maybe a better idea would be a parts tractor swap, like they do with hockey equipment, but on a larger, heavier scale.  I have been disappointed by most "swap meets" where most of the stuff is flea market crap.  Do you think the idea would catch on?

John Deere / Unstyled B
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:48:17 AM »
I brought home my father-in-laws 1938 B this weekend.  The only thing it needs is a fender bracket, does anyone have one laying around?  It's cast iron and was one of the fatalities when the barn fell on it.  I could have the pieces welded up, but would like to try the replacement route first.  Thanks.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Maxwell Steel wheels
« on: October 20, 2008, 02:35:08 PM »
I mentioned this on the general list as well, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has ever heard of Maxwell Steel wheels?  They were made as an attachment for a rubber tired tractor, kind of like complex wheel weights.  When you needed extra traction you would open up the spikes and be able to pull right through (like a giant sunflower).  The wheels were designed by someone in Marshfield, Wisconsin (Mr. Maxwell).  There was a set on e-bay about a month ago and since I have an affinity for things on steel, I bought them and brought them home last weekend (I'll post a photo later on).  I vaguely remember seeing an ad for them in one of my books/magazines, but I can't find it now.  The pair I have were supposed to have come from Mr. Maxwells nephew, and may be the only set in existance.  Has anyone else ever seen/heard anything about these?

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Barn Cleaning
« on: September 03, 2008, 05:07:27 PM »
I spent memorial day weekend re-organizing my pole barn and taking a few of the toys out for a drive.  Sadly, it had been three to four years since most have been out in the sunlight, but I carefully started the opperational ones and took them for a ride.  I tried to move them around so I could fit just one more inside, but I failed.  Anyway, attached is a photo of my steel wheel row (the ones I like the best).  They include a 1937 pacemaker, a 1935 JD D, a 1937 Case CC, and a 1938 Case C.  Not in the photo is my 1935 Hart-Parr/Oliver 18-27, also on full steel, but tore apart in the shop.

Enjoy, Joe

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Parts Washer Solvent
« on: August 04, 2008, 03:59:25 PM »
Ok Guys,

What do you use, what works the best for general grease/grime removal?  I have a 20-gal parts washer that has never had fluid in it, I think it's time to put it to work.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Oliver Hart Parr 18-27
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:09:30 PM »
Ok guys & gals, I'm going to try posing a bunch of questions (over time) and see if anyone answers.  I have a 1935 HP 18-27 on full steel that's been sitting in my shop for the past five years, I've decided to get after it with haste in the hopes of being able to drive it around by spring 2009. Has anyone out there worked on one of these before?  It have it taken apart in the shop and am in the process of cleaning everything up before re-assembly.  I found a full gaskets set with 0-rings from olsons gaskets that I hope to order in the next few days.  The tractor was pretty clean and has come apart really easy with no stuck or busted bolts.  The only thing I could find wrong with the motor was excessive carbon build-up on top of the pistons, and throughout the head.  I've cleaned that all off now.  My first question is, would you go through the the trouble of replacing the o-rings on the sleves if you have no reason to suspect they are bad?  Do they deteriate (sp) with age, or are they best left alone?  The sleves are in great shape with no scoring or top rim, if that makes any difference.
