Tomorrow it will be one month since Larry joined the group as the 99th member.  It will be a whole month without adding a single subscriber or reaching the 100 mark.

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / The Best Show on Tracks
« on: April 21, 2008, 05:50:40 PM »
Dave,

Are you referring to the Tulare show?  I know that was this past weekend.

The Best Show on Tracks hasn't happened yet.  It is in June at Woodland CA.

Although the name of the show is "Best Show on Tracks" it is open to exhibitors of all makes/models of tractors and engines.

Should be the biggest show in the west this year!

How about:

PIPE:

Used to increase leverage with a socket drive handle.  Good for snapping off stuborn  bolts. Also used for testing the strength of your ratchet handle or flex handle.

I asked Spencer to change my user name.

I didn't want to reregister using a new name and then have anyone wonder what happened to "George" and why he had stopped posting.

Took a few days, but he was able to do it for me.

Thanks Spencer! :D

ATIS General Tractor Discussion / Ford 4000

Danny,

Can't help you much with your 3000.  I know I had some problems identifying my 4000 as mine was made in the UK and the numbers aren't the same as the US made Fords.

I did get my 4000 in the shop last night.  I got a 5 gal bucket of oil last night from Costco and will try to get the transmission filter tonight.  Hopefully changing the filter, cleaning the pickup screen, and fresh oil will resolve some of the transmission problems I've been having.

My experience in crossing the border with old iron and the experience some of my friends have had in the past is that it varies depending on the border crossing agent.  Most times there is no problem bringing stuff across the border, but every once in awhile you get some jerk that just likes to show you that they have the power to give you a hard time.

Just be nice and friendly when talking to them and you should be okay.

The newest tractor I have is a 1967 Ford 4000 3 cylinder diesel with SOS trans.

I bought it last fall and this spring the SOS is giving me problems.  Not much of a surprise as it seems some Ford people swear by the SOS and others swear against it.

I haven't had time yet to check it out, too many other things going on to take up my time.  But the bottom line is the tractor doesn't move in any gear.

I'm hoping it is as simple as a plugged filter needing to be replaced.

George

ps... I going to try to post something several times a week in the hope that if we post messages that maybe others will join in.  Got a swap meet I'll be at the next couple of days so nothing from me till after the weekend.

Here's a couple pictures of a 1940 Allis Chalmers A that I used to own.

I bought it from Oscar Cooke's Dreamland prior to the big tractor auction they had there.

I sold the tractor a few years ago to a collector in Wyoming.

Ralph,

Tell us about your picture.  What is mounted on the Massey Harris?  Is the John Deere pulling the MH?

'round the pot-bellied stove / Spring winders

Charlie,

I'll post some more pictures of it probably this weekend.  The pictures I posted earlier do no show a mandrel in place to have the spring wound onto and you also have a hand crank attached to the mandrel to turn it.

I already had my first lesson on what not to do with the winder.  Ended up with a bleeding finger.  Lucky is was a simple puncture and not cut like I feared it was.

Don't know if any of you make springs, but it is something I've been interested in learning.  It is kind of a hassle to go to the hardware store to buy springs when sometimes you're not really sure what size you need.

Anyway I bought a Di-Acro spring winder off of eBay.  Got it yesterday and tried making a few springs last night.  It does a great job of making compression or expansion springs.

However I can see where it will really take some practice to make springs the size you want.  I can see where I'll end up with a big box full of assorted springs as I attempt to get that perfect one made.

Also making a nice looking loop or hook on the end of the spring will take some practice too.

Di-Acro is still in business but no longer sells the spring winder.

I know for the amount of money I'll end up investing in the winder and related tools and all the wire I'll need that it would be cheaper to just buy springs, but what is the fun in that:D

I see that 99 people have registered for the ATIS forums.

Next person will put us into 3 digit territory!!!

I know it sometimes takes time for these things to take off, but it has been surprising how slow this forum has been in attracting posters.
