Stupid Question - Trailer towing balls

Does anyone know why there are so many different size towing balls? Does a 2" ball really have more towing ability than a 1-7/8" ball? I hate having to switch back and forth, anyone know the history of such mundane things?

I do not know the history, John, but the fix would be to upgrade all of your 1 7/8 hitches to 2". Overkill is not a bad thing. One advantage to switching the hitch in the receiver is that each hitch can be set up for correct height for level pulling of the trailer it is used for. Isn't life always a trade off??

Here's a chart of hitch ball sizes.
If you're pulling tractors around you really ought to have a 2-5/16 ball and a class IV or better hitch.
I think most serious bumper pull trailers are 2-5/16" hitch.

I agree with George and Charlie V - when it comes to trailer balls -"Size Manners". I have broken Trailer balls in the past , Not something I want to do again.
